Is Protein Powder JUST for Gym Junkies?

Alright I will admit it; I am a gym junkie! No surprises there I guess? I work in a gym, workout in a gym and yep, on my days off I will still head into gym. I love it!

I am your typical Lululemon-wearing, flat out junkie which after a “sess” of pumpin’ iron I  leave the gym mixing up my Lean Whey protein shake and off to have my post workout meal. That’s me.

There are a lot “gym goers” who possibly find the whole concept of a protein shake quite strange?? Now aside from being a delicious way to finish off a tough workout, a protein shake has many different functions which help to take results to the next level. Blunt Cortisol Production

We usually identify Cortisol as our ‘stress hormone’ which of course, at high levels it definitely is. However cortisol is also what makes us feel awake and alive and gives you extra drive for your training session. But once you finish your last set, put your weights down on the floor we want to leave our cortisol behind. By feeding your body with protein it will blunt cortisol production which in turn kicks off the recovery process.

Now unless you are happy to a pack a steak or chicken breast in your gym bag, a protein shake is the quickest and easiest way to do this.

So How Will your Body Benefit?

  • Increase fat Burning, especially leaning out through your stomach
  • Increase Lean Muscle, crucial for boosting your resting metabolism

What to Do When you Are Feel Ready to Toss in the (Sweat)Towel…

Have you ever had one of those moments where you are completely and utterly frustrated by weight loss? You almost want to reduce to a child-like state, stomp your feet, spit the dummy and tell yourself will never hit your goal!

It may have been the lack of a result, sick of being good all of the time, or heck was it just that the wind was just blowing in the wrong direction that day??  Let’s be honest, this whole getting-lean-business can at times take its toll on a gal!

When you are having “one of these moments” yep, you could in fact throw in the towel, eat cake, gain weight and head on down that a slippery slope. Or why not use this pepped up energy to fuel your determination and go at your goals like never before?

So first things first….Are things Really That Bad?

C’mon I am sure that there are some drama queens amongst us which have indulge on reality. Perhaps from time to time been guilty of expanded the size of our waist beyond what it actually is? Or maybe even dreamt up an extra saddlebag or two? When you feel overwhelmed or fed up, take a deep breath and ask yourself; Are things actually that bad?

In most cases the answer is no. By chance you say yes, then maybe this is the wake-up call which will be a very pivotal moment for you.

Get to Know Your Passion

We talk a lot about setting goals and having a focus.  This is all good and well, but if you only think about your goal you will never allow yourself to be happy until you hit the target. You risk feeling like your goal is just out of reach, just around the very next corner, which will at some stage wear you down.

What I believe is more important is knowing what your driving passion behind the goal and the reason why you set it in the first place.

Let me explain…

If you are working towards 14% body fat and you focus continually just on the 14%, as I mentioned, you will feel like this is an unfilled until you reach that particular body fat percentage. However identifying your passion and reason why you set this goal in the first place will make you feel fulfilled each and every time you make a healthy choice or break a sweat.

For example my passion for training is to live a life where I feel strong, healthy, motivated and focused; I feel this every time a train and make a healthy choice that I am aligned with my passion.

What’s yours?

Once you know your passion, then get a coach…

The most successful people I know have a coach. A good Personal Trainer will consistently track your results, keep your motivation high and of course whip your butt into shape each session. If and when you are feeling frustrated or have reached a plateau they will be able to give you the key to taking your results to the next level and help to push you forward. Crucial if you want to get super lean.

Barbecued Snapper with Tangy Tomato & Olive Sauce

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love to cook and I am going to say it flat out; I think I am pretty darn good at it!

Most people when trying to get lean and lose weight believe that their diet has to turn dull and boring in order to get results; but I am going to challenge that theory right here and now with this amazing recipe which features in one of my latest e-books Eat Your way to Lean.

I must admit that I am not a big ‘fish-eater’ and it is something that I try to include more of, to help with rotation and variety of foods and of course to stay lean. I have also happened to sneak in some ingredients which have the following secret added get-lean benefits;

So this my friend’s is my all time favourites fish-dish I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

Barbecued Snapper with Tangy Tomato & Olive Sauce

Ingredients- Serves 4
4 Snapper Fillets
1 Tablespoon Organic Butter, melted
Himalayan Salt
1 Lemon
 Sauce
1 Teaspoon Organic Butter
3 Cloves Garlic, roughly chopped
250g Green Olives, pitted & chopped
400g Canned Whole Tomatoes, roughly chopped
1/2 Teaspoon chili flakes
3 Tablespoons baby capers in vinegar, rinsed
1 Tablespoon Thyme leaves

Method
1. Turn the BBQ on high and leave to heat
2. Using your stove place saucepan on medium heat & melt the teaspoon of butter
3. Then add the garlic, chili & cook for 3min until the garlic is slightly browned
4. Add the tomatoes with the juice, olives & capers & simmer for 15min until the sauce starts to thicken then add the thyme
5. In the meantime pat the skin of your fish dry, season with salt & tip the melted butter on top
6. Add the fish to the BBQ skin down & cook for 3 min, turn & cook for a further minute
7. To serve spoon the sauce onto the plate & place the fish on top with a lemon wedge

Do you CRRRRAAAAVE Sugar? How to Beat Your Addiction For Good.

Typically dressed up as a cute little bear, a sweet little raspberries or a sour coated something; but don’t be fooled my friends, this could be the very thing that is ruining your weight loss results, sending you on a roller coaster of cravings and having a huge impact on your health.

Whatever sugar packed little treat tickles your fancy, you find it wickedly lures you in when you are at your most venerable. I think we all know ‘that’ feeling. It may be that you have had a crappy nights sleep? Your hormonal? It’s 3pm? Whenever your cravings typically hits, it can be so powerful that you pretty much stop what you are doing to feed this addiction.

Fact. Sugar is flat out addictive. I am sure you will find it interesting to know that your brain activates (if addicted to sugar) when seeing sugar the same way as a heroin addict to heroin; powerful stuff! I know personally I’ve have spent some late nights luring in the IGA isles at the pick and chose lolly section losing my mind.

Don’t beat yourself up about this behavior. Knowing how addictive and powerful sugar is, I think it’s time to cut yourself some slack, and go for a no guilt approach. We are also going to tackle some effective ways to ween yourself away from the jelly babies for good!

Scientifically, sugar is one of the most rapid foods to converted into energy, which explains craving it when you feel tired or lacking a bit of va va voom. Additionally when you eat high glycemic carbs with fats (sugar, bread, pasta, soft drink) there is an increase in serotonin synthesis which in the short term is mood altering and makes you feel happy.

No wonder these cravings hit when you are most venerable!

How to Maintain Your Wonder Woman Status without Losing Your Sh#t!

Let’s face it, the expectation to do it all, have it all and multi-task to your eyeballs is just a part of our typical day or week.

Your in-tray seems like it never reduces, the food shopping, house, husband and kids all need you and somewhere in the midst of all of this you actually want to achieve some goals of your own.

Personally I thrive on being busy. It gives me a buzz to knock of tasks and spin from one appointment to another and do do do. But I also know when I have spun too hard and left myself feeling downright exhausted. However, this taught me a lot of lessons and I now think for the most part I have learnt how to maintain my Wonder Woman status, without losing my sh#t.  Today I am passing on these onto you.

#1 Tip to Keep Your Wonder Woman Status – Sleep 

Of course I have said this before, but only because it is important. Not 6 hours not 7.2 hours shoot for 8 hours plus. If you are someone that struggles in this department then you should see a BioSignature Practitioner to have you nodding off quickly and waking up singing with the birds.

Through training and sweating it out in the gym, you lose essential minerals from you body which need to be topped up in order to avoid feeling worn down. I always recommend as a BARE minimum a multi vitamin, magnesium, fish oils and vitamin D & zinc if you test low. Trust me this makes a world of difference to your energy levels and mental state.

So go at it ladies, in true Wonder Woman style and remember to always look after number one (that’s you) along the way.

I had to share this salad with you because it was an absolute hit each and every time I make it. It a recipe that is on high rotation at my house as a great side to grilled meats.  It is zesty, tasty and most of all super super quick

Being that this salad is loaded with chilli, your metabolism will love the thermogenic benefits and additionally the red vinegar also helps to stabilise your blood sugar.

Zesty Tomato Salad
5 Ripe Tomatoes sliced

1 Green chilli finely chopped

3 Spring Onions finely sliced

5 Tablespoons of Red Wine Vinegar

2 Tablespoons Cold Pressed Organic Olive Oil

Method 

1. Grab a plate for presenting your salad, and lay out the sliced tomatoes in a single layer over the plate.

2. Take a small mixing jug and add the spring onions, green chill, olive oil and red vinegar and whisk together with a fork

3. Spread the dressing mixture over the top of the tomatoes, season with salt and pepper and serve

Doing Everything Right and Still Not Getting Results? – Part 3

Ever felt frustrated with weight loss? Yep, I am holding my arm straight up in the air and holding it high. I know how it feels to try and restrict calories and then attempt to run my little butt off and still not get super lean.

Pretty frustrating hey?

Now before you hang up your training shoes, or throw your dumbbells out of the window, you will remember that in part 1 of this series I mentioned blocking factors that could be stopping you from getting results.

Just to recap; blocking factors are issues that although you are doing everything right they can still hold you back from your ultimate body.

And now let’s get to busting down these (damn) blocking factors….

#1 Reason You Are Not Getting Results – Sleep

This is your first stop ladies. Sort out your sleep, it will honestly change your life. If you want more energy, stable moods, keep yourself young and of course better fat loss results this is pit stop number 1.

3 Main Requirements for Great Sleep

  • Fall asleep within 15-30min
  • Solid uninterrupted 8 hours (no getting up for loo stops)
  • You feel refreshed and envigorated in the morning

  • Wind down for a good 2 hours before bed, gadget free, dimmed lights and chillin’ out
